Circular business models and costs: industrial symbiosis for inland fishery waste

The industrial processing of inland fisheries in the Argentine Litoral region generates 30% of waste (heads, bones, and viscera) that negatively impacts the environment. Framed within the circular economy and the quintuple helix model, this study evaluates the technical and commercial feasibility of valorizing these discards through enzymatic hydrolysis to obtain omega-3-rich oil and fishmeal.
Preliminary results confirm the technical feasibility using species such as sábalo (tarpon/shad) and boga. Commercially, a high potential is identified in the Argentine pet food market, which is growing at an annual rate of 16%.
The main disciplinary contribution focuses on cost management, by adapting the General Theory of Cost to a process-based accumulation model in closed loops. Finally, it is concluded that installing a plant in Santa Fe is economically viable, eliminates logistical costs, reduces the carbon footprint, and promotes sustainable regional development through public-private articulation.
